Over more than two decades, Refugio has gone through several stages, evolving from a cultural venue into its consolidation as a studio-workshop. Between 2006 and 2008 it operated as a café/bar in the Sopocachi district of La Paz, with an intense artistic agenda. Live music was presented from Monday to Saturday, giving a stage to young talents who are now part of the music scene. Film cycles, theater performances, book launches and other events also took place. During this period, two music projects by emerging artists were also produced.
From 2008, the space became the workshop and workplace of Sergio Vega. Besides his work as a graphic designer, workshops, courses and cultural activities were organized here. In 2016, Refugio moved and began operating in the family home, turning it into a cultural space whose most significant addition was the construction of the shed, which served as an exhibition hall and multipurpose room. During this period, which runs until 2022, Refugio strengthened its identity with exhibitions, music and literary events, and new proposals for artistic exchange.
In 2023, Refugio moved to its permanent home, expanding its infrastructure and reach. One of the most important milestones so far has been the exchange project with the Design program of the Universidad Católica Boliviana, which brought visits from Kaja Renkas (Poland) and Ivette Valenzuela (Mexico). This meeting resulted in a joint exhibition, a workshop with 40 students and two lectures, consolidating Refugio as a space for international connection and collaboration.
